We are delighted to announce our next in the long line of IVCA Seminars, which is once again being hosted by our Legal Partner and Members' Service, Briffa. Briffa are known for their specialist work in intellectual property, media, copyright, trademark and patent work. They work for all businesses which use intellectual property to do effective business in today's competitive environment.

Three guest panelists from Briffa will be on and to answer your legal questions on all matters related to the industry in which will certainly be an enlightening event, which follows on from last year's seminars which covered copyright both in film and music.

Whilst the panel will not be able to answer specific legal enquiries, they will be able to discuss general legal matters and media law and this will be an ideal time to bring your questions on contractual law, copyright law both in the UK and overseas and other questions.

The evening commences at 6.30pm and will run until approx 8pm followed by half-hour of networking drinks and nibbles.

The cost attend is £30.00 ex vat for members, and £90.00 ex vat for non-members. Members may bring additional guests at the members' rate.

Margaret Briffa

A leading intellectual property lawyer and founding partner of Briffa.Margaret advises on all aspects of intellectual property protection and enforcement, with particular emphasis on dispute resolution. Margaret acted for the claimants in many design, patent and trade mark cases including the design cases Parker v Tidball (1996) and the Court of Appeal case of Farmers Build v Carier (1997) which are the cornerstones of the modern law of industrial design. She also represented the claimant in the copyright case of Norowzian v Arks & Guinness (1998). On the trade mark side, Margaret is experienced in the planning and execution of anti-counterfeiting operations both in the UK and abroad and has been involved in numerous successful search and seizure operations. She has recently been appointed to act as defence lawyer in actions brought by the Motion Picture Association of America against 321 Studios in respect of the new law in the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 dealing with circumvention of technical measures applied by rights owner.Margaret is co-author of 'Design Law' published by the Law Society 2004.In 2008 Margaret Briffa was appointed to the Panel of Independent Experts at Nominet to decide cases under the Dispute Resolution Service.

Nisha Baveja

Nisha joined Briffa in June 2008 and is involved in non-contentious and contentious trade mark and design right matters from filing applications to opposing applications submitted by others. Nisha also deals with various intellectual property related commercial contracts including manufacturing, supply and distribution agreements, franchising agreements and website development agreements, as well as terms and conditions and website policies. Nisha is particularly interested in working with and offering practical advice to small start-up to medium sized businesses.

Peter Mason

Peter has experience of managing a wide range of both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters. Peter has particular expertise in music rights but also acts for clients in the film, design and innovation industries. Peter has experience in giving strategic business and legal advice to small and medium sized companies whether building a new business or undertaking major new projects. Peter’s previous work includes acting for a collection society in an action against the government regarding implementation of European Law. Peter also manages a number of substantial trade mark portfolios.Peter believes that the key to providing a good service is to take the time to listen and understand the unique circumstances in every matter.Peter joined Briffa in 2007 and trained with niche city firm GSC Solicitors. Peter studied at the University of Liverpool and the University of Westminster.
