Diversity Is The Spice Of Life

Eula Clarke, Head of Diversity, Barclays

Diversity is the spice of life at Barclays. Our people are the foundation of Barclay’s success.

It's as simple as that. We want the most talented, whatever their style, personality, age, race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability.

Our employees reflect the communities we serve, and in every county where we have a presence.

Our commitment to a diverse workforce extends across the world, with different schemes and projects reflecting the needs of each local market. That commitment has been captured and clarified in our Diversity Charter. We have a cultural mix of employees that reflects the customer base we serve.

We have people from ethnic minorities at every level, including senior management. One of the ways we have achieved this is by refusing to tolerate prejudice or stereotypes, and valuing the different insights and perspectives that people from different backgrounds can bring. UK employers who come together to establish and share good practice on religion and belief in the workplace.

There is also our active internal network for employees from ethnic minority backgrounds, the Cultural Diversity Network.

This Network, of which I am Vice Chair, supports the BME communities with skill training, mentoring and business development.

The network support staff around their own personal development offering mentoring for internal employee and also support the National Mentoring Consortium, set up to enhance employability of black and Asian students.

We have an active internal network for employees from ethnic minority backgrounds, the Cultural Diversity Network.

Barclays has provided mentors to over 400 graduates since the scheme was established 12 years ago.

Diversity is now a must do initiative and not a nice to do. We are very proud of our achievement and the support the staff give to the community.
