Aims and Objective:

To increase the breadth and depth of the knowledge transfer of technology into UK- based creative industries companies and to accelerate the rate at which this process occurs.



Enable Networking for optimum information exchange

To ensure a Network, aligned to the development of a National Technology Strategy, which would bring together suppliers, customers, producers, academia, research & technology providers.



Build Relationships for growth and innovation

To facilitate and encourage appropriate networking to enable the creative industries to access networking opportunities structured to help the sector access knowledge and information central to innovation growth.


Specific Goals

Within the overall mission of accelerating the rate of technology transfer into the creative industries CREATE-NET - the proposed knowledge transfer network for the creative industries, would aim to achieve the following:

  1. To increase the rate of technology transfer between the digital economies and the creative industries.
  2. To facilitate a coherent, comprehensible and high quality flow of improved knowledge transfer between producers and customers about customer needs and innovative solutions.
  3. To promote innovative approaches to the use of digital technologies in the creative industries through enabling appropriate networking in both the UK and internationally.
  4. To provide government with an informed voice on the sector’s technological needs and relevant factors promoting or limiting innovation in the UK.
  5. To work with all appropriate networks currently operating in this field so as to ensure full benefit to the UK of effective knowledge transfer across all relevant technology boundaries.

The Credentials of the International Visual Communication Association (IVCA) to Lead such an Initiative

The IVCA has been in existence for over 40 years and is the largest professional body of its kind in Europe. Its membership includes 2,500 producers and commissioners of visual communications in the UK. Its remit includes all media platforms with specific expertise in the digital economies.

Although initially established to meet the needs of the corporate sector, it currently works throughout the creative industries. Through its ongoing range of activities and award schemes, it recognises and promotes creative and technical excellence in corporate film, video, and live events as well as in broadcast film, television, radio, theatre and the performing arts. The Association has a proven track record of assisting with knowledge transfer between technology producers and creatives so as to maximise the reach, impact, effectiveness and competitiveness of their work.

In acknowledgement of its success in promoting competitiveness in international trade in 2005 the IVCA was acknowledged as a Sector Focal Point by UK Trade and Investment.

IVCA Fellows come from all areas of the creative industries and include Kevin Spacey, Bob Phillis, Anita Roddick, Bob Geldof, Roger Graef, Ridley Scott, Anna Ford, Jeremy Irons, Joan Bakewell, Sir Trevor McDonald, Peter Bazalgette, Sue MacGregor,  Sir Peter Bonfield, Professor Robert Worcester, Lord Attenborough, Moira Stuart and Lord Puttnam.

The IVCA is represented on a range of industry forums including Board membership of The Digital Content Forum; SkillSet; The International Forum on Standards and Measurement; The Intellectual Property Forum; The Corporate Responsibility Programme; The Business Leaders Forum; the Digital Media Forum; the Corporate Commissioners Group; the Interactive Television Forum; the Business Events Group: and the Ethical Society Forum. The Association has also developed codes of best practice and improved partnership action between sectoral groups.

The Association has an ongoing commitment to social equality and has policy groups for Race and Ethnicity; Gender and Orientation: Physical Ability: and Age Discrimination. In 2004 it launched, at Parliament, its new Clarion Award Scheme to acknowledge and promote excellence in content across all media platforms and art forms.

The Association organises the IVCA Awards annually which are the biggest event of their kind in the world for corporate communication, it also produces the Perfect Pitch Awards for interactive television content, The Biz-Nets for digital media and web based content, and LiveCom for Live Events and Experiential Communications.  In 2003 the Association also launched the Clarion Awards to identify and promote content excellence across all broadcast and corporate media platforms. Categories include Film, Television, Radio, Multimedia, Theatre and Performance Arts.

The structuring of the CREATE-NET Project would be led by Wayne Drew, Chief Executive of the IVCA. Wayne has a distinguished career across the creative industries and is board member, or official representative, on a range of committees. These include: SkillSet - The National Training Body for Film & Television; The Development Board of the National Film School for Wales; the DTI hosted Digital Content Forum; the CBI Communications Group; the National Film and Television School Training Forum; and The Vision Charity.

Wayne has written and broadcast widely on media issues. He is a former advisor to HRH The Prince of Wales, The British Academy of Film and Television Arts; The Arts Council of Great Britain; and past assessor of six Regional Arts Boards.
